HTL Dornbirn Meets IFI

Christian Haisjackl, MSc, of the students union presented the curriculum and explained the student's life around the University of Innsbruck. Questions about which lecture types exists, which subjects exist and why do we need this much logic and mathematic have been asked and answered. Another important topic was, what is about working while studying and what are the future job perspectives.

Afterwards, Prof. Justus Piater, PhD, head of the research group IIS (Intelligent and Interactive Systems) gave an overview of the computer science research groups, which immediately sparked animated discussions. What incentives motivate the semantic mark-up of all this information -  to date mostly unstructured - out there on the Web? Would it not be nice to be able to search movies by activity content? Will this happen by adding structured movie scripts to the video file's metadata, or by advanced computer vision methods? Enhancing traffic safety by having vehicles communicate with each other is an attractive prospect - but how do we protect such life-critical systems from cyberattacks? How can autonomous artificial systems acquire general world knowledge? Will robots one day surpass human intelligence? How human-like should robots become? Some of these questions have to be turned around before they can be answered: What exactly is "intelligence", be it human or aritificial? Machines already outperform humans in many areas once thought to require intelligence, such as arithmetic, chess and jeopardy, but nobody would consider this indicative of an imminent takeover of the world by robots. Nevertheless, now is a good time to think about what role we will want robots to play within - or alongside - society.
